False
Allegations: Are You At Risk?
The misdiagnosis
of Shaken Baby Syndrome places hundreds of persons at risk for criminal
charges and civil lawsuits each year. Alarmingly, these risks
remain undisclosed to thousands of people who care for children each
day.
Statistically,
boyfriends of the victim's mother, biological fathers, female baby-sitters
and mothers are the most likely to be accused of Shaken Baby Syndrome.
The number of alleged male perpetrators make up approximately 60% of
all accused persons, while female baby-sitters make up only 12% .
Because the theory
of Shaken Baby Syndrome focuses on the crime being committed outside
of the presence of witnesses, and the timing and dating of subdural
hematomas is unreliable, the last person who cares for an ill child
is most likely to be accused. Early detection is the key to recognizing
and treating a child with a subclinical intracranial bleed.
Look for the
Signs:
- Lethargy
- Vomiting
- Failure to feed
- Seizures
- Inconsolable
crying
- Position discomfort
